IIM MK Meeting Held 2nd Sept 2014 – Asking for More

We had a great meeting on 2nd September – from the furrowed brows it was obvious that John Niland had managed to stimulate the brain cells.  John’s challenge to everyone was to encourage making that phone call to a contact ahead of rearranging your to-do list.

 

John’s described his topic as follows:

Most people go to market with a “value-proposition”, a pitch or at least a CV. But there are several reasons why these are the least effective ways to do so. 

First, most professionals find pitching difficult, so they find reasons to postpone or procrastinate. Second, pitches get blocked and CVs get filed… these are the psychological auto-responses triggered by sales messages. “Leave it with us and we will get back to you” is an all-too-common response. 

What about a creative alternative? Since 2000, John Niland has been energising professionals to go to market in creative ways. “Asking for More” discusses some typical scenarios where interims and freelancers don’t ask. A bit on the psychology, and then a few practical tips to re-energise your marketing for the autumn.

 Background to the IIM MK Local Node Meetings

The meetings are for Interim Managers, Independent Consultants and other members of the freelance community. The objectives are:

  • To meet other Interims / Freelancers in an informal environment
  • To share best practice
  • To facilitate collaboration

The meetings were started by Stuart Copeland in response to an initiative by the Institute of Interim Management to hold regional get togethers. The first meeting was held in a pub in April 2010 with just four people but have run quarterly ever since with increasing attendances.

The main event runs from 7pm until 9pm but with refreshments available from 6.15pm. The location is David Lloyd, Livingstone Drive, Newlands, Milton Keynes, MK15 0DL. A small charge of £15 plus VAT is made to cover room hire and refreshments and we use Eventbrite to manage the tickets.
